How to Prepare for a Summertime Move in Arizona
How to Prepare for a Summertime Move in Arizona

Summer in Phoenix is here! Yes, we are aware that it gets a tad bit hot around mid-summer (okay—so maybe it gets really hot). Even so, there are still plenty of active people around the valley who use the summertime to work on house maintenance, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects, and other activities. Some people might even plan their home or office relocations during the summer when moving companies tend to be a little less busy. Moving can be stressful, but the process is easier if you have a well-thought-out plan and a trusted moving company on your side. That’s why our team wanted to share some tips for how to prepare for a summertime move in Arizona.
Remember to give yourself plenty of time to prepare and have a few extra helpers on hand. The more prepared you are, the smoother your move will go! Pay special attention to this planning if you are new to living in Arizona. If you have any questions about prepping for a summertime move in Arizona or want some additional tips, feel free to call Andrews Installation Group at (602) 334-7912.
Hire Trusted Movers
One of the easiest ways to have a smoother moving experience is to hire a team of trusted movers. We understand that it can be hard to select just one company (after all, there are so many movers out there!). Take your time doing research to figure out what company offers the services that best fit your needs.

Check the Weather
If you’re moving in the summertime, there’s no doubt that it’s going to be hot. Even so, you should prepare yourself for the high temperatures and humidity ahead. Be aware of rain in the forecast, and make sure you have somewhere to take shelter if a dust storm rolls in.
Dress for High Temperatures
It might seem silly to remind you of this, but it’s still very important! Light, airy clothes are a good option to deal with the heat. You’ll also want to wear comfortable sneakers or tennis shoes. If you want to protect your skin (in addition to wearing sunscreen), we recommend wearing a lightweight long-sleeve shirt.
Be Ready for Rain
If you’re moving in July, August, or September, there is a high chance that you may get caught in a monsoon. Make sure you have umbrellas and ponchos ready, as the weather can take a turn very quickly! If you live in a flash flood area, definitely make sure you have a safe spot to wait out the storm with your movers. It’s important that everyone is kept safe during the moving process.
Find Some Shade
It can be tricky to find shade in the summertime, but this will be essential if you are planning a move. If possible, try to set up some large pool umbrellas or tarps to give your family and your movers some shade. You can also set up some portable fans or A/C units to help keep everyone cool.
Use Sunscreen!
This is a definite requirement. Moving can take a long time, and you might be in the sun longer than you think. Be sure to use a high SPF sunscreen and cover your face, ears, neck, and arms (if you don’t have a long sleeve shirt to wear). Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays and sunburn, which can have serious negative effects later on. Take a few minutes to apply sunscreen every hour or so to keep your skin safe.
Drink Plenty of Water
We make light of the fact that Arizona has a dry heat, which makes it more tolerable. But because of the dry heat, we sometimes don’t realize how much water and salt our bodies lose during the day.
It goes without saying that drinking lots of water is essential for proper hydration. Have plenty of water on hand, and don’t forget to drink some electrolyte drinks to replenish your body’s nutrients. Also, make sure you have enough water and sports drinks to offer to the movers or anyone else who is helping you out. Keep everyone safe by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day, and take breaks when you need to!
Additional tips:
Consider using an insulated water bottle to keep your drinks cold throughout the day
Cold fluids can help to decrease your internal body temperature
Warm (or room temperature) water is more easily absorbed by the body, which can help in a pinch if you need hydration right away
Drinking too much water can flush out essential salts from your body, so always have an electrolyte drink on hand to replenish those nutrients!
Keep Your Pets Safe
When moving, it’s a good idea to set up a safe space for your pets to stay while the movers are working. You can either set aside a quiet room in your house—just make sure this room is already empty of furniture and belongings—or bring your pets to a daycare center for the day. Avoid leaving your pets outside in the summertime, even if they have shade. Remember that paved surfaces get much hotter than the ambient temperature and can burn your pet’s feet. Plus, the temperature in the shade may very well be too hot for your pet to handle without adequate cooling methods, like fans or portable A/C units. It’s best to leave them in a space, air-temperature controlled space inside during the move.
Don’t Try to Do Everything Alone
If you have never moved before, you might think that it’s something you can do by yourself. But don’t underestimate the amount of work that goes into a move! You’ll definitely want to recruit some help—whether that means asking family and friends to help you move to a new apartment or hiring a mover for a larger job. Whatever the case, don’t try to do everything by yourself. Let the movers help with the heavy lifting so you and your belongings will be kept safe.
Go with the Flow!
We know that moving in the summertime can be stressful, especially if you are new to Arizona. If you are prepared and have plenty of help, this process should be a breeze. It’s important to keep an open mind and go with any changes that may occur that day. In other words, do your best to plan, but don’t panic if something doesn’t go the way you thought it would. With the right moving company on your side, you’ll have plenty of help!
