Confirm Your Moving Appointment

Your moving company will contact you a couple of days before your scheduled moving day to confirm your appointment. Be sure to give them any additional details or instructions prior to their visit. If an emergency occurs and you have to cancel, try to give your movers at least 24-48 hours’ notice. Keep in mind you may have to pay a cancellation fee.  

Keep the Area Clear

Before your movers arrive, be sure to clear entrances, doorways, and hallways of any objects or debris. This will help the move go much quicker and more efficiently. Plus, the process will be a lot safer for you and the movers if no one is tripping over debris. 

Have a Furniture Layout in Mind

Even though you haven’t had the chance to see your furniture in your new home yet, it’s helpful to have an idea about where you would like everything to go. If you’ve taken measurements of each room, you should have a good idea of which furniture pieces will fit in each room. Either way, you’ll want to be prepared to deal with snowy and icy conditions on move-in day. When moving day arrives, be sure to follow the same tips we mentioned above, but also keep these weather-related tips in mind.

Hire Movers for a Winter Move

When frigid weather hits, you’ll be glad to have a team of movers to help you bring in your furniture! If you are expecting bad weather on the day of your move, be sure to plan a backup moving date with the movers. It’s always better to be prepared!

Clear Away the Snow

Your movers will need a clear path to get from the truck to your door. Take some time to shovel snow from your driveway, sidewalk, and stairs. The easier it is for the movers to get to and from the truck, the faster (and safer) your move will go. 

Salt the Driveway 

Even if you don’t have snow on your driveway, it’s a good idea to lay down a layer of ice melt salt. This will help keep your driveway and walkway clear of any ice that may form overnight. It’s important to keep yourself and your movers safe on move-in day. (Plus, the last thing you want is for someone to get hurt on your property.)

Waterproof Your Belongings

Even if the forecast doesn’t call for snow or rain on your moving day, it’s a good idea to waterproof your belongings just in case. Try to use waterproof storage items such as plastic bins, mattress bags, plastic wrap, plastic bags, bubble wrap, and waterproof packing labels. Remember: water and electronics don’t mix! Pay close attention to how you pack your electronic devices. If necessary, you can also have your moving company pack electronic appliances to ensure their safety. 

Dress for the Weather

This may seem like an obvious tip, but make sure you are dressed for the weather. You will likely be spending a lot of time outside when the movers arrive, so plan to dress warmly. It’s also a good idea to protect your home’s interior by lining entryways with plastic runners. You can also use spare cardboard to cover carpets or rugs. It is likely that the movers will drag in some ice and snow, but with the right preparation, you can protect your floors. 

Keep Your Pets and Children Safe

When moving day arrives, things can get pretty hectic. We recommend leaving your children and pets in the care of a trusted relative or sitter. All of the open doors might make it easy for your pet to escape, which wouldn’t be a great start to your new home life. Plus, keeping your children in the care of a trusted friend will keep them safe when it comes time to move in heavy furniture and boxes.
